Completion of one of these qualifications will provide you with the required knowledge element for Associate Professional Level CIPD membership, and is an ideal opportunity for supporting continuing professional development. This is the second part of the Foundation Diploma in HR Practice - accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) - and will build on what you have learned on the previous course. 

Learners must demonstrate to CIPD directly, that they have relevant experience and can apply for a membership assessment to assess their workplace activities and behaviours. If successful in this process, you will qualify for the new Associate professional level of CIPD membership. This is the second part of the Foundation Diploma in HR Practice - accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) - and will build on what you have learned on the previous course.

The CIPD: Foundation Diploma in Human Resource Practice (Level 3) courses are offered in 2 parts to ensure accessibility for self-financing students. It is offered as follows:

Diploma (Part 1): 16 credits 
Diploma (Part 2): 21 credits

NB: Part 1 must be completed before Part 2

Study Option: Blended Learning (combination of distance learning in partnership with ICS Educate with certain taught components).

What you will experience

You will learn the fundamentals of HR practice and build a firm foundation on which to base a successful career in human resources.To achieve the CIPD Diploma in Human Resource Practice, you need a total of 37 credits, 16 from part 1 and a further 21 from Part 2 including the following units:

  • Supporting Good Practice in Performance and Reward Management* (6 credits)
  • Supporting Good Practice in Managing Employment Relations (6 credits)
  • Delivering Learning and Development Activities* (6 credits)
  • Supporting Change within Organisations (3 credits)

NB * Mandatory attendance at workshops is required for these units.

Assessment will take the form of:

  • Personal Development Plans
  • Portfolios
  • Case Studies
  • Skills assignments with written tasks

The start date listed in the ‘Availability’ section refers to the date of course cohort. Course materials and information on dates for submission of work for the part 2 are posted directly to the student following the course commencement date, there is no induction evening with the part 2. Workshops are offered within the course term, and students will be given advice on these at the booking stage. Should a student miss a workshop, they can pick it up within the next offering, as Workshops are generally made available every four months.

Entry requirements

The Foundation Diploma in HR Practice (Level 3) Part 1 must be completed before you start this course. You must be proficient in the English language and have knowledge of or experience in human resource support or management would be beneficial.

Please note: Students must hold membership of CIPD to receive their Certificate or Diploma in Human Resource Practice. If you have not already done so, you must become a student member of CIPD. Membership fees are payable directly to CIPD, and are not included in the course fee.

For individuals who have already completed Part 1, we are currently accepting applications for the October intake of Part 2. We will be accepting applications for the February 2020 and June 2020 intakes at a later date.

At North East Scotland College

Successful completion of this award will equip you to take on a support-level role in any Human Resource department.  Successful students have the option to complete and online access course through the Robert Gordon University which would allow them to enrol on the post graduate degree which leads to the full qualification.  

In some cases successful students can get directly onto the post graduate degree if they have a certain amount of experience. This is subject to interview. Alternatively, higher level CIPD qualifications are available through ICS Educate on a distance learning basis.



This course requires some attendance at College. There are three workshops split between Part 1 and Part 2. Workshops are mandatory and each is 2 days in duration. Each workshop will be held at Aberdeen City Campus.
