Why take this course?

This Unit is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills for further study or employment in an administrative or IT/Accounting environment. It is a Unit within the PDA Book Keeping and the HNC/HND Administration and Information Technology courses, but is also included within other HN Group Awards and can be taken as a stand-alone Unit.

The focus of the Unit is using a commercial accounting software package to process financial transactions and preparing accounting reports for a small business. It is primarily intended for those who expect to take up a career or further study in accounting and/or financial administration, those who wish to extend their manual book-keeping skills to cover computerised accounting systems and those with appropriate work experience who wish to formalise their skills.

Credit points and level: 1 HN credit at SCQF level 7: (8 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7)

What you will experience

You will cover a range of topics in relation to accounting software, and on completion of the Unit should be able to:

  • Use an accounting software package to set up and amend accounting records
  • Use an accounting software package to process financial transactions
  • Use an accounting software package to incorporate year-end adjustments and produce final accounts for a small business
  • Use an accounting software package to produce a range of accounting reports

You will be assessed through three separate assessments. In order to complete this unit successfully, you will be required to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in all assessed work. This Unit may be assessed by one practical assignment which covers all the outcomes or each outcome may be assessed separately. The assessments will be carried out under open book supervised conditions. This means that you will be able to bring with you to the assessment any software manual or other notes or teaching materials. You may also access help menus during the assessment.

Entry requirements

Access to this Unit is at the discretion of the centre. However, candidates would normally be expected to have some prior knowledge of manual book-keeping. This could be demonstrated through successful completion of the HN Unit F7JV 34: Recording Financial Information or a similar qualification at SCQF level 6/7 (prior to undertaking this course).
