Health & Social Care (Generic Route) SCQF Level 6

This course is specifically designed for those who wish to pursue a career in health or social care.


Why take this course?

This course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to work in health care or social care environments.

The course will increase your understanding of a variety of care contexts and service users, effectively preparing you for further study or employment. You will also investigate care intervention, and the roles/responsibilities across associated professions.

What you will experience

You will cover a broad range of topics from dementia care and psychology to biology, anatomy and sociology. Throughout the course you will develop important skills in literacy and numeracy, in preparation for further study or employment.

In addition to the NC qualification, students will also complete Higher Psychology and Higher Care qualifications. 

The course also includes a work placement in a variety of care environments, which may include working with older adults, those with learning disabilities or service providers supporting special client groups. This will allow you to gain valuable hands-on work experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have one Higher at Grade C or above, in addition to three National 5 , Intermediate 2 (Grade B or above) or Standard Grade Credit level qualifications, including English. A genuine interest in working with people and good communication skills are essential.

Evidence of a minimum of 40 hours volunteering or a placement within a care environment is also required.

A clear disclosure or ability to gain membership of the PVG scheme in respect of Regulated Work with Children will be required prior to placement allocation. Please note that your membership will be organised by the College.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, we will ask you to provide evidence of your English language skills as part of the application process. For this particular course, the English language requirements are:

  • A strong B2 score is required for the College English Language test in all four disciplines (writing, reading, speaking and listening).
  • A minimum of 170 is required in the Cambridge English: First exam.
  • A score of 5.5 is required for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in all four disciplines (writing, reading, speaking and listening).
