Why take this course?
Applied sciences are used in almost all industries, from medical sciences and pharmaceuticals to food and drink, energy, electronics, telecommunications and information technology. This wide–ranging, advanced level course covers theoretical and practical aspects of physics and chemistry. A large amount of hands–on training is involved, giving you a chance to put theory into practice and develop valuable skills in experimentation, analytical testing and modern instrumentation.
What you will experience
This course will strengthen your existing knowledge through in–depth study of a variety of key scientific areas centred on organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry and areas of physics including mechanics, light and optics, electronics, quantum physics and dynamic phenomena. You will also receive extensive training in computer coding which is an essential tool of modern physics research. On this programme you will undertake a major laboratory–based project in chemistry or physics which will provide the opportunity to further enhance practical skills and innovation, project management and presentation.
Applicants should have Higher qualifications in Chemistry and Physics, or a Higher in one of these subjects and a National 5 (at a minimum of grade B) or equivalent in the other. Maths at National 5 (Grade C) or equivalent is also required.
A Foundation Apprenticeship in any subject area will be considered equivalent as one unrelated Higher for entry to this course.
Alternatively, applicants should have successfully completed the NC Applied Sciences SCQF Level 6 course at Grade B or above.
